Serving with Compassion: Dheerana’s Vesak Sav Dansala

A Celebration of Generosity, Unity and Selfless Service

In celebration of the sacred Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, Dheerana Youth Forum organised its first community service initiative—the Vesak Sav Dansala—on 30 May 2026 at Kotte Sri Naga Viharaya.

The project was inspired by the Buddhist values of generosity, compassion and selfless service. Its purpose was not only to offer refreshments to devotees and members of the public visiting the temple, but also to encourage young people to experience the true meaning of serving others.

Planning began several weeks before the event. Members worked together to prepare the project plan, organise the budget, gather ingredients and equipment, maintain food-safety standards and coordinate with the temple administration and other affiliated organisations.

Preparations at the temple began on the evening of 29 May, with members setting up the tent, arranging the venue and decorating the premises with Buddhist flags and lighting. The following day, Forum members and their parents worked together to prepare five cauldrons of Sav Kaenda while carefully maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.

The Dansala was formally opened by lighting a traditional coconut-oil lamp. With friendly service, teamwork and effective coordination, Sav Kaenda was offered to nearly 2,000 devotees and members of the public.

The project brought together 20 Forum members and 10 parents and other volunteers, creating a team of 30 individuals united by a shared purpose.

A significant feature of the initiative was its commitment to environmental responsibility. The programme was carried out as a zero-plastic project, avoiding polythene and single-use plastic throughout its implementation. After the event, the venue was cleaned, waste was properly managed and reusable equipment was safely collected.

More than a Dansala, this project became a practical expression of Dheerana’s founding motto:“Paratthaṃ Paṭipajjatha” — Act for the Welfare of Others.

It strengthened unity among members, encouraged volunteerism and demonstrated how young people can contribute meaningfully to religion, society and the environment.

The success of the Vesak Sav Dansala was made possible through the dedication of our members, the generous support of their parents, the guidance of the temple and the contributions of donors, volunteers and well-wishers.

For Dheerana Youth Forum, this was not simply the completion of a project. It was the beginning of a journey of service—one guided by compassion, strengthened by unity and dedicated to creating meaningful change.
